Feb 17, 2017 - Refine Version released on Steam by CFK.[1]
On July 31st, 2022, a new patch was released on Steam that added an opening movie, made the game run better on modern operating systems, improved translations for English and Chinese speaking players and also censored the nudity seen within vacation images for English and Chinese speaking players. [2]
Mechanical Information[]
Basic Gameplay[]
Like its successors, Princess Maker 1 is a mostly menu-based game. After entering a name and birthdate for the daughter, the player is taken to the main screen (pictured above) where most of the decisions are made. The daughter starts at 10 years old and leaves at 17 or 18 depending on her birthdate because the game starts and ends on 31st March regardless of her age. The main buttons in this screen let you travel to the palace, talk to your daughter, check her stats, go shopping, change settings and the most important, schedule her activities.
At the scheduling screen the player must choose three tasks for the month, each taking approximately 10 days, and can choose between education, work, vacationing, resting in the town and adventuring. Going to school is expensive, but raises her stats. By doing exams, she can earn titles, Reputation (REP.) and go up in ranks, which will make schooling more expensive and more effective. Working also changes her stats, raising some and lowering others depending on the selected job, and earns you money. Vacationing and resting in town are the main way for lowering fatigue that is accumulated by classes and work, but costs money. Lastly, the adventure mode is an RPG-like mini game in which your daughter explores and faces off monsters to win experience and treasure. Your daughter does not work or go to school on Sundays.
The player always starts with $500 Gold.
Plot[]
You play as an unnamed knight, who defeated a demonic army besieging the kingdom depicted in this game. In the aftermath of the war, the King offered the knight a prestigious military position, but the knight simply asked the king to provide for the many homeless orphans of the war. Offering to take in one of the children himself as an example, he is entrusted with the care of a 10-year old girl (default name Maria) to raise into adulthood.

Stats[]
Main Stats[3][]
When the Refine version received an English localization update in July 2022, the names of several stats changed. Guides made before this date may refer to the stat names from the previous localization.
Stat name | Description |
---|---|
Stamina | How long it takes for your daughter to get sick, affects her HP as well. |
Strength (STR.) | How much damage your daughter does with physical attacks. |
Wisdom (formerly Intelligence/INTELL.) | How much damage your daughter does with magic attacks, her MP, resistance to magic attacks and power of protection and health recovery spells. (MP will stay at 0 until she passes her first study exam) |
Grace (formerly Elegance) | How graceful your daughter is. The higher this is, the more people she can meet when visiting the castle. She also competes with this stat in the Miss Kingdom contest in the Miss Sun category. In addition, high Grace allows her to avoid errantry battles by talking to the monsters; the stronger the monster, the higher the Grace must be to avoid fighting. |
Guts (formerly Spirit) | How long it takes for your daughter to get sick and how well she performs at jobs. |
Fatigue (formerly Stress) | When this gets too high she can become sick, when she is in this state her stats will decrease. |
Charm (formerly Glamour) | Your daughter competes with this stat in the Miss Kingdom contest in the Miss Star category. |
Morale | If this stat is 0, your daughter may become a troublemaker, when she is in this state she can only work at the Church, Sleazy Tavern and Sleazy Inn. |
Reputation (REP. or REPUT.) | This primarily affects endings. It can be increased via various methods such as errantry, doing well in work, gaining education titles, winning in the harvest festival, talking in the castle. You can lose reputation by working in the Sleazy Tavern and Sleazy Inn. |
Experience (EXP.) | Gaining enough EXP will cause your daughter to level up which generally helps with combat. |
Combat Skill (CBT SKL) | Generally helps with combat, can be gained by levelling up with EXP. |
Speed (formerly Dexterity/DEX) | The likelihood of your daughter evading attacks and avoiding errantry combat by hiding and running away. |
Armor | The higher this is, the less damage your daughter will take. |
Weapon | How much damage your daughter does with physical attacks. |
HP | The amount of damage your daughter can take in a combat encounter. |
MP | The amount of spells your daughter can cast in a battle encounter. |
Other Stats[]
Stat Name | Description |
---|---|
Sex | Your daughter's sex, this will always be female. |
Zodiac Sign (Zodiac) | Your daughter's star sign. |
Blood Type (Blood) | Your daughter's blood type. If you want to focus on combat, choose O. |
Birthday (Birth) | Your daughter's birthday. |
Age | How old your daughter is. She will always start at 10 years old and the game will end if she's 17 or 18 depending on her birthday. |
Height | How tall your daughter is. She grows taller as she ages and this is unaffected by anything else. |
Weight | How much your daughter weighs. This is increased by resting and decreased by working. |
Build (formerly Proportions/PROP) | How well proportioned your daughter is. This stat is displayed as a percentage, with 100% being considered the best. It is calculated using her height and weight. She competes with this stat in the Miss Kingdom contest in the Miss Moon category. |
Money | How much money you have, you can get money from jobs and selling errantry loot. |
Conversation[]
Every month, you can have a conversation with Maria. Her stats will affect the conversation, leading to either an increase or decrease in one of her stats as a side effect. The stat increases/decreases are always a random amount between 1 and 10, so it is advised to save before speaking to her and reload to get the desired value.
While the stat name for Spirit has changed to Guts in the 2022 update, it still references changes to "Spirit" when the stat is affected by speaking to your daughter.
If Maria is a troublemaker, she will ignore you and talking will have no effect.
Lecture is special. If you use it while Fatigue > Morale, then you have the possibility to choose between [Preach More] and [praise]. If you choose [Scold] while Primary Stats* > Charm, then you have the possibility to [praise More fully]. [4]
Classes[]
You can learn Experience (EXP.) (through Martial Arts), Wisdom (through Study) and Grace (through Etiquette). Each course will cost you a certain amount of money per day and give you a certain amount of a stat per day. Just like jobs, if your daughter doesn't do well during the day, she will earn nothing! (but it will still cost you money).
There are 3 levels (A, B, S) and you have to pass an exam each time to reach the next level. Each exam demands a certain amount of a stat to be allowed to pass it. You also need to pay a fee and win a fight (for Martial Arts) or answer two questions (for Study). If you lose your fight or give the wrong answers, you will still lose your money and will have to try again next time. Each level costs a little more money but also grants more stats per day.
When you pass the S EXAM, you gain the last title but beware: you will graduate, therefore you won't be able to attend the class anymore! If you put the class in your schedule anyway, you will just talk to your teacher.

Festival Contests[]
Locations[]
In addition to the Errantry exploration, there are a few places Maria can visit before starting her scheduled tasks for the month.
Town
Entering the town allows the player and/or Maria to go shopping.
There is a Weapon Shop, Item Shop, and Armor Shop.
Townspeople
Talking to the townspeople once a month can give a better idea of how Maria's reputation and morale are perceived, what her most important stats are, and what her weakest stat is.
Castle
Maria can be sent to the castle to attempt to visit and converse with the King.
While at the start of the game she simply gets turned away by the guard, by passing individual checks of her Grace, she can be introduced to people of higher and higher rank.
Passing each check will grant a one-time Reputation boost of +8, for a final total of +48 Reputation for making it all the way to the King.
